Doing it Good

 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. – Titus 1:6-8

Paul gives instructions to Titus, a leader in the church, Paul writes that he should set an example by doing what is good. He then speaks to Titus about his teaching saying that he should show:

  1. Integrity
  2. Seriousness
  3. Soundness of speech

I have been having some conversations with some fellow bloggers on the whole issue of what worship is and how it can be one dimensional if we think that worship is only singing songs. True worship flows from a life of integrity and seriousness, in the context of making sense.

These are some great tips for speaking as well. What a great reminder for me as I teach, that the I must speak from integrity (do I live what I am saying?), from seriousness (is it just a comedy show with no content?), and soundness of speech (have I spent time preparing a clear teaching?). This could apply to worship leaders, tech crew, stage crew , nursery workers, everybody who is serving. Maybe they should be the basis for our ministries.

Father, may each of our exchange gatherings be just a piece of our response to you. May everything that is done be filled with integrity, seriousness, and soundness of speech. May it be such that you are brought fame.

    Scot,

    First I thought you had written to yourself but then I noticed that the \”Scott\” was spelled differntly. Then I realized that you knew yourself for longer than 2.5 years. Whew got that out of the way!

    On a more serious note: you are absolutely right. Since I don\’t sing or lead worship in that way it would be easy for me to cast those thoughts aside. But every Sunday I do stand before some hungry people who are waiting to hear \”a word from God.\” I am faced with the awesome privilege of being His mouthpiece but with that comes a challenge. Preach His truth. Exalt Him. Draw attention to Him. Yesterday I preached on John the Baptizer who said with his life and words, \”He must increase but I must decrease.\” Anything that does less than that is wrong. If people only remember me or what I said or laugh away their morning then I have failed. If attention is drawn away from Jesus for any reason or by anything then I/we have failed. I too pray for integrity in my life but also integrity from/in the pulpit. May I speak not my words but His. May my words not be the persuasive words of man but the powerful words of God.
