Waste Not . . .

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted. John 6:12

Jesus had just taken some loaves and fish and multiplied them to feed over 5000 people. An extraordinary miracle. Jesus then throws in this weird request: “Gather all the leftovers.”

What?

If I am a disciple I am thinking, “Let it go. Leave the scraps for the birds or whoever. There is more here than we ever could eat and if we need more, Jesus can bring us more.”

Jesus seems to be teaching a couple of things here.

  1. Do not waste. We are responsible for what comes in our hands and are not to let things be wasted.
  2. Squeeze everything you can out of a miracle. Miracles and blessings shouldn’t be left on the ground, they should be used for what their were designed for.

God, help me to not waste the blessings that you give me. Help me see things if they are laying around wasted. I want to squeeze everything I can out of the things you have given me. In a season of some redirection in my life, help me to identify the miracles and the leftovers in my life, and squeeze everything I can out of them.

  1. Wow, I never looked at it that way. Awesome :-). Maybe they used some of that food on their trip to help feed them for awhile while they travelled, or maybe they gave it away, too! Who knows? Crazy.

    God bless,
