What are you risking?

16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. – Eph 3 (NLT)

Christ will make his home in our hearts when we trust him.  I don’t think Paul was talking about the trust that comes just from lip service.  I think he was talking about the kind of trust that demands our attention.  The kind of trust where we say “if God doesn’t come through, I’m hosed.”

image The Great Blondin was a tight rope walker in the 1800s. Before safety nets and regulations, he performed countless acts, including tight-rope walks across Niagara Falls.  He did this numerous times. On one walk across the falls, Blondin stopped to cook and eat an omelette.  Even more impressive was the feat of carrying his manager Harry Colcord across the falls on his back.

Colcord did nothing except hang on; and trust.

I want to trust God like that.  I want to live a life of risk. I want to hear clearly from God and move in directions of risk.  I am growing tired of suburbia and the safe life.  I want to trust more, and as a result grow deep, and strong.

  1. In small group last night we talked about this. I said when I go I want to be remember as a man who loved his wife, was a good father and lived life to the hilt. I believe Wild at Heart said it best: "Every man has a battle to fight, an adventure to live and a beauty to rescue." I too tire of the mundane. Thanks for the reminder Scot.
