Next month I will be taking some time away to plan the teaching / preaching content for 2015. Are there any particular topics you would like to hear? Perhaps some questions you have about what the Bible has to say about certain subjects? If you have suggestions, comment below!

16 Oct 2014Scot,
I wish you would preach a sermon about issues atheists and agnostics have with the bible and Christianity. I watch debates by William Lane Craig about such topics as: Does God exist, Is God necessary for morality, Why I am/not a Christian, Did Jesus rise from the dead, etc. He does a great job addressing issues from a Christian apologetic position. I feel a lot of the reasons atheists are push away from Christ are controversial issues: Sins over history from the church, w/ science and intelligent design, hatred of God either by Old Testament wrath or current day issues with world wide suffering. These are addressed sometimes individually, but I feel it would be great to see a sermon that encompasses many of the issues non-believers have with Christianity.
Thanks,
Paul

16 Oct 2014Scott,
It\’s great that you humbly ask for input, and take time to seek God in planning for future messages to the church.
The Letters to the Seven Churches, found in the first 3 chapters of Revelations, are filled with symbolism that can be difficult to understand. I feel that they are like a report card for churches then and now. Breaking those down as if they were report cards to the church today, would make a great series that beg the question, \”What if Jesus wrote us a letter?\” In all of the letters Jesus lists the good things the churches are doing and the bad. He loves and gives praise to the good things, but even if there are far more good than bad, He warns that He will destroy the church if they do not repent. It\’s interesting, and a bit scarey, to look at what is going on in the modern day areas of those seven churches.
Thank you, the staff, and the members of MCC for all you do to share the hope of the Gospel with everyone. I continue to benefit and grow from listening to the sermon podcast and being able to travel to be there in person a few times every year. My daughter and future son-in-law have found a home at MCC, while they are in school at ISU. They love it there and the results of being a part of MCC and their C Group, show everyday.

16 Oct 2014Old Testament Prophets, Heroes and Forerunners of Christ.
Also studying objects as symbols in the Bible…why does flame and smoke represent God? Why are water and bodies of water symbolically associated with baptism? Why is Jesus the Lamb rather than the calf (idolatrous) or the pigeon, etc?
How do specific places geographically tell a story over the generations (Samaritan woman at Jacob\’s well? Bethel? Ai? Jerusalem? Jesus at Jericho? The Valley of Hinnom? The Jordan? The Dead Sea?)
These are all questions I wonder about, since I lack the seminary classes to even grasp all the connections across time and place in the Bible to tie OT and NT.

18 Oct 2014Dealing with Death: How to not be angry with God. My sister is struggling with our dad\’s death. So how do I help someone else with that anger with God. How does a person get over their grief? What is normal and what can we do to help another in their grief? I sure we are not the only family dealing with this.
Dealing with Forgiveness and regaining trust: We touched on it in an earlier sermon. But is there more indepth. How do you forgive betrayal, how do you forgive dishonesty. We are asked to love and forgive others. Grace forgives. But how does one become graceful? How does one regain trust when one does not forget?

18 Oct 2014Patience – with children, in family, marriage, and in wanting but not receiving from The Lord….waiting out the \”not nows\”
Jealousy – of your neighbor or sibling rivalry (even as adults)
Communion – the beginning of it, why it\’s so important, a reminder in how to correctly partake here at church and other places
Turning the other cheek
Giving freely, even to those who have wronged you and you don\’t feel \”deserves it\”

24 Oct 2014I know this is a slippery slope but I would love to hear more about our current world / political / elections situation. I\’m always on the conservative side but I hear lots of views from liberal Christians and I would like some thoughts and direction from the pastoral staff. I basically vote on moral issues in my mind foremost but thought maybe I should look at it differently. Some guidance would be helpful for me.

13 Nov 2014Hey Scot, something I\’ve noticed, especially with the most recent Halloween holiday is the way some people dress. Having a conversation with another brother from one of my C-Groups, he commented on how the way many women are dressing these days has become way more revealing. I\’ve even noticed some of the young sisters at Maryland wearing some more questionable ensembles. It\’s unfortunate but a tactic the enemy uses when you\’re sitting in the pew trying to get your praise on and you can\’t help but notice the skin tight leggings two sizes too small the girl standing in from of you is wearing. Is this worthy of a sermon?
