Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command. So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. Lev 10:1-2
Nadab and Abihu gave worship that was not according to the instructions of God. Unauthorized fire. Maybe it was that they approached God flippantly. Maybe on their own terms. Maybe they made no distinction between the holy and the common (Lev 10:10).
As a follower of God, I sometimes feel that I walk this weird line between the holy and the common. On one hand, God is a close friend. On the other hand, he is, well, God. Is he both holy and common?
I also wrestle with the things of God. In our gatherings, do I give thought to what is holy and what is common? This plays in every element. Are the songs holy or common? Communion? Offering? Humor? Teaching? I have certainly seen the extremes.
The same could be said of the things in my daily life.
God, may I recognize the common and the holy. May I never offer you fire and worship that is common and unauthorized. Search my life in such a way that everything I do is an expression of authorized worship for you.
