Why?

Then David fled from Naioth at Ramah and went to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my crime? How have I wronged your father, that he is trying to take my life?”  – I Sam 20:1

This week over 30 Virginia Tech students and faculty were killed by a student.  I can’t imagine the pain of  the families.  Why would something like this happen?  This kind of thing is not supposed to happen.  What did they do wrong?

What did I do wrong?

We ask that question when trouble comes.  There is no good answer. In David’s case, the King was trying to kill him out of jealousy.  In the case of Virginia Tech, we may never know why.  Many times, there is no good answer.  Life is broken and unfair.  We sometimes get caught in the middle.  The results are sometimes deadly.  Still we wonder why.

God, I again pray for the family of the dead at Virginia Tech.  I pray for the campus and everyone associated with it.  I pray that somehow, even in the questioning of why, you would be well known.  In the middle of tragedy, work good things.
